Electric cars should be much cheaper than ICE (internal combustion engine) driven cars. But in India they are very costly as compared to most other countries. The reasons behind it are :

  • Volumes are low.
  • Taxes charged by state & central Governments are very high.
  • Initial Cost of BATTERIES is extremely high, ALMOST 25% TO 50% OF COST OF VEHICLE. As Electric cars use those big battery. This adds to the cost as the two main parts of a electric vehicle are battery and motor i.e. the engine.
  • Production of electric vehicles in India is not as big as that of conventional petrol or diesel cars (considering assembly also).

Tata Altroz EV

Tata Motors will launch the electric version of the Altroz hatchback in 2022. It is likely to be powered by the same electric powertrain that does duty in the Nexon EV.
